이 절에서는 1 레벨 상속하는 방법과 2 레벨에 걸쳐 상속하는 예제를 다루어 보도록 하겠습니다. 일단 할아버지클래스를 만들죠. 할아버지클래스를 상속 받아 아버지클래스를 만들고 아버지클래스를 이용하여 객체를 만들겠습니다. 그리고 아버지 객체에서 할아버지 소속의 메서드들 호출해 보도록 하겠습니다. 이렇게 된다면 아버지가 할아버지 것을 이용하는 것이 되겠죠. 지금 설명한 예제는 아래와 같습니다.

위의 예제에서 Father 클래스는 GrandFather 클래스를 상속하고 있습니다. GrandFather 클래스를 상속 받는 순간 Father 클래스는 GrandFather 클래스의 모든 것을 가지고 시작한다고 보면 됩니다. Father 클래스를 테스트하기 위해서 InheritanceTest 클래스의 main() 메서드에서 Father 클래스 객체 f를 생성하고, Father 클래스 객체는 GrandFather 클래스의 것을 자신의 것처럼 호출 하고 있습니다. 이것이 바로 상속의 장점입니다. 생성자를 제외한다면 Father 클래스는 아버지 클래스의 메서드와 자신의 메서드 2개를 가지게 됩니다. 다음은 위의 프로그램의 구조를 보여 주고 있습니다.
1 레벨 상속을 한 프로그램의 구조
아버지가 할아버지를 상속 받았기 때문에 할아버지의 메서드를 아버지가 사용할 수 있습니다. 하지만 결과에서 이상한 부분을 발견할 수 있습니다. 바로 생성자의 호출입니다. 아버지 객체를 만드는데 할아버지의 생성자도 호출되고 있습니다. 이상한 일이죠. 이것은 이렇게 설명할 수 있습니다. 상속과정에서 상위레벨 클래스의 메모리가 생성되지 않는다면 자식레벨의 메모리는 생성할 수 없습니다. 그렇기 때문에 Father 클래스로 객체를 만들었다면 Father 클래스가 상속 받은 모든 상위레벨의 생성자가 차례대로 호출 되어지고, 제일 마지막에 자신의 것이 호출되어집니다. 할아버지가 없다면 아버지도 없겠죠. 그래서 할아버지 생성자가 호출 된 후. 아버지의 생성자가 호출됩니다. 할아버지, 아버지, 아들까지 3단계로 나누어서 상속해도 이 규칙을 어기지는 않습니다. 아래는 3단계의 구조와 프로그램의 예입니다.

상속단계가 늘어나더라도 기본적인 법칙은 똑같습니다. 메모리는 최상위클래스부터 차례대로 생성되며 Child 클래스는 최하위 클래스인데도 그 상위의 클래스에 속해있는 메서드를 모두 사용할 수 있습니다.
